Book Review: The Grownup – Gillian Flynn

The GrownupThe Grownup by Gillian Flynn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The start of the book was quite a surprise!  With a starting paragraph like this, how could I not be surprised? “I didn’t stop giving hand jobs because I wasn’t good at it. I stopped giving hand jobs because I was the best at it.” (Whoa, that is not what I expected to read as soon as I opened the book!)  Not knowing what to expect from Gillian Flynn (as I’ve never read any of her books), I read that first paragraph, had a nice laugh, and was excited to continue to find out what else was in store for me.

The beginning of this book was great – I loved the humor and the personality of the main character…it definitely had me intrigued; however, towards the center, the book kind of lost me a bit. It was a little slower, a little less exciting, not really funny anymore. Fortunately, being a short book, the slowest part was over in no time. When I got to the end, I thought I knew what to expect, but I was wrong.

Even though it was an unexpected twist for me, I didn’t necessarily think it was a good twist. It led me wanting more…more excitement, more information, more of thrill (maybe?). I just kind of felt “blah” about it at the end. I wish the excitement of the first 1/3 of the book could have carried through in the final 2/3, because then this book would have been a definite winner.
