Outside of the Box: Easy @ Home Ovulation Test Kit Review!

Usually I don’t get too personal on blog posts, but I think this is a product review where I won’t be able to avoid it.  I have been trying to get pregnant for about a year now without success.  Besides the fact that this can be frustrating, it can also be expensive (do you have any idea how many ovulation and pregnancy tests you can go through in a year?!).  That’s part of the reason I was excited to review this product.  First off, I was shocked at how much is included in this box…this is seriously a GREAT VALUE for the amount of product you receive (and trust me, I know this!).

The box contains 100 LH Tests (blue) and 20 hCG Tests (pink).  The LH Tests are more commonly know as ovulation tests while the hCG Tests are more commonly known as pregnancy tests.  Let me go into a little information about both of these tests –

LH Tests (Ovulation Tests)

The ovulation test is used to predict when there is a surge in LH (Luteinizing Hormone) which will then in turn predict when you are most likely to be ovulating.  The LH is in urine of women and increases in the middle of the menstrual cycle.  The increase in LH triggers ovulation.  Ovulation is projected to occur in 24 to 48 hours after receiving a positive LH Test.  Testing for LH while trying to conceive is important because it can not always be assumed that ovulation will always occur at the same time each menstruation period as various factors in life can contribute to a change in this.

hCG Tests (Pregnancy Tests)

Pregnancy tests detect the presence of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) which will appear in urine early during pregnancy.  This hormone (secreted through urine) is produced by a developing placenta after conception.

How To Use

Using these strips is easy and both are done basically the same way.  First step, urinate into a cup and let the urine reach room temperature.  Once urine has reached room temperature, remove the strip from the package and dip it into the urine (arrow will be pointing towards urine) for three seconds.  After the three seconds, lay the strip on a clean, dry surface.  In five minutes, you can read the results!

Reading The Results

For the LH Test (ovulation test), if only one color band appears (on the control region) or if the test band is lighter than the control band, it means there is NO LH SURGE.  If two colored bands are visible and the test band is equal to or darker than the control band, one will likely ovulate in the next 24 to 48 hours and means LH SURGE was detected.  If no band is visible or only a test band appears, the test is INVALID.

For the hCG Test (pregnancy test), if only one color band appears (in control zone) and there is no band on the test zone, this means NEGATIVE (NO PREGNANCY).  If distinct bands appear in both regions, the test is POSITIVE (PREGNANT).  If there is no visible band or only a band in the test region, the test is INVALID.

Although this is the general guidelines for the tests, you have to realize that these tests will often have false positives and false negatives at times.

Overall, I thought this kit was an excellent value for the money!  I’ve had no complaints for this kit and instructions were clear and product was easy to use.

  1. Great review!! My husband and I are trying for our second with no luck! I was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 years ago and was told it would be very difficult to get pregnant. I had done 6 fertility treatments with no success 😦 It wasn’t until we stopped trying before I got pregnant! Guess they are right when they said to stop thinking about it and it will just happen!
